Independent School Volunteer Program

Bridges offers independent school volunteers year-round opportunities to build relationships with students in Bridges. These relationships, built across racial and socioeconomic divides, lay the foundation for a more connected, equitable, and inclusive Baltimore-metro area.

Summer Institute

During the summer, independent school volunteers from the St. Paul's and Gilman School communities spend 2-3 weeks with a grade of elementary or middle school students. They act as classroom assistants, chaperone field trips, facilitate games during recess, and serve as role models.

Alexander, an upper school student at St. Paul's School, goes on a service field trip with 6th grade students during the Summer Institute.

After-School Program

During the school year, independent school volunteers from the St. Paul's and Gilman School communities have the opportunity to serve for a season in the Bridges after-school program. Volunteers in the after-school program tutor a 4th or 5th grade student, facilitate activities, and serve as role models.

Tharen, an upper school volunteer at St. Paul's School, leads an outdoor game for students during the after-school program.

Volunteer Honor Society

Bridges' most dedicated volunteers, those who have served in 3 or more programs, are inducted into the Volunteer Honor Society "Bridges 3+."

Middle school student, Davon, wrote of his volunteer, Will, "You helped me complete the swimming test by showing me how to tread water. When we got off the bus you always knew how to do our handshake. You helped take me to the nurse when I hurt my ankle playing basketball. When I felt down, you would make me laugh somehow. I'll never forget how you came to talk to me when I sat alone at breakfast. I want to thank you for everything you did for me in the last 4 years we have been together."
