Charley
Mitchell

Charley is a 1973 St. Paul’s graduate who returned to campus in 2012 after a career in international publishing as an editor and publisher. Previously he worked for Wills & Associates, where he worked on the 1980 Alaska Lands National Conservation Act, represented clients in Annapolis and was a member of the Mayor's Young Business Roundtable. During the American Bicentennial, he worked in the Nature Conservancy's American Land Trust program, traveling extensively on behalf of land preservation and working as a speechwriter. He was an investigator for the Baltimore City Public Defenders Office on behalf of indigent defendants and later taught in the Community College of Baltimore’s Prison Education Program.

Charley has deep ties to his alma mater, having served for six years on the St. Paul's Alumni Board. His three brothers, cousin and nephew are St. Paul's alumni, as is his son Alec '10. His mother, Elizabeth Byrd Mitchell, painted the portraits of George O'Connell '35, George Mitchell '44 and Louis Dorsey Clark that hang on campus. He is a faculty advisor to the school newspaper and mentors students in writing.

Charley is the author of two award-winning books: “Maryland Voices of the Civil War," the story of the Maryland civilian experience during that war; and “Travels Through American History in the Mid-Atlantic" (both published by Johns Hopkins University Press). He has published widely on Civil War-era politics and slavery in Maryland and has discussed his work on Maryland Public Television and several local NPR radio programs. He has appeared at the Annapolis Book Festival and the Baltimore Book Festival and chairs the Publications Committee at the Maryland Historical Society, where he serves as a trustee. From 1995-2001 Charley was a travel writer for the Baltimore Sun, writing about historical sites in the mid-Atlantic region, and is presently editing a book with Prof. Jean H. Baker, “The Civil War in Maryland Reconsidered.” He holds degrees from Penn State and the University of Maryland.
