The St. Paul's Schools is pleased to announce the appointment of Dr. Edward Trusty Jr. as the interim head of school at St. Paul's School for Boys for the 2020–21 and 2021–22 school years. A highly respected leader and educator with Baltimore roots and a strong background in all-boys education, Ed joins St. Paul's from The Kinkaid School in Houston where he is currently the interim head and has held various administrative roles since July 2014. He previously was head of the lower school at Calvert School after serving on the faculty at Gilman School for 13 years.
"The opportunity to join the St. Paul's community while returning home to our family and friends and reengaging in service to the Baltimore community is, indeed, a blessing for my family and me," he says. "I am honored and look forward to wearing the blue and gold proudly."
Ed is an exceptional educator and school administrator, with many career highlights. At the elite Kinkaid School, he has guided the professional growth of faculty, helped close a major capital campaign, advanced inclusivity efforts, and been a daily presence among the students. While head of the lower school at Calvert, he grew the enrollment and updated the curriculum. He gained extensive boys' school experience as a long-term faculty member at Gilman School, where he taught fourth grade and helped coach the varsity football team. He also served for years as director of the B.E.S.T. Summer Scholars Program, whose mission is to support African American students as they transition from city schools into independent schools.
Ed grew up in Baltimore City and graduated from Gilman in 1991. He went on to complete a bachelor's degree and a Master of Arts in teaching at the University of Virginia, then a doctorate in education at Morgan State University, where his dissertation examined "Achievement Patterns of Students in an Elite, Male Independent School."
In the two-year interim role, Ed will focus on enhancing our academic excellence, transitioning the upper school into a new building, and continuing the We Are St. Paul's campaign. He will pick up where Dave Faus leaves off in guiding our unification efforts in partnership with President Jeff Huang, Ereni Malfa '89 (head of St. Paul's School for Girls), and Bryan Powell (head of St. Paul's Pre and Lower School). Of unification, he says, "It is incredible to serve the community at a time when this vision is now being realized. Upholding the strong traditions already established and working collaboratively to form new traditions are exciting times for any leader."
Over the coming months, the school will share a schedule of events (virtual and in-person) to introduce Ed and his wife, Dynell, to the community.
