Dear Members of the St. Paul's Community,
We write to inform you that the 2019-20 academic year will be David Faus's final year as headmaster at St. Paul's School. After seven years of service to St. Paul's, Dave has accepted a position as head of school at The Benjamin School in North Palm Beach, Florida. While this news is bittersweet, we are grateful to Dave for his many contributions to The St. Paul's Schools.
During Dave's tenure, the school has flourished. Under his leadership, the Academic Council has focused on developing a sequential K-12 curriculum, working to ensure that the academic experience is innovative and connected across the divisions. Dave also has worked to enhance partnerships locally and globally, affording students a wide variety of educational opportunities around the world, from Costa Rica to Scotland. He has committed to fostering a diverse and inclusive community at St. Paul's and to building programs that develop character and integrity.
Dave has been an integral part of the vision, fundraising, and implementation of numerous campus construction and renovation projects. These projects include a 3,600-square-foot Nature Pavilion, the newly renovated ropes challenge course, a Black Box Acting Lab, the Laporte golf training center, and extensive renovation of the stadium. In 2019, the school broke ground on a new Upper School building that will provide students and teachers with a modern facility to optimize and inspire learning. Under Dave's leadership, the campaign so far has raised $23 million, including the largest gift in the school's 171-year history.
Dave also has raised the profile of the school through his involvement in local and national educational organizations, including the International Boys' Schools Coalition (IBSC), the Baltimore Educational Scholarship Trust (BEST), the Maryland Interscholastic Athletic Association (MIAA), and the Country Day School Headmasters' Association.
Finally, he has shepherded the school through a period of transition, leading the way to the successful unification of The St. Paul's Schools. Guided by his model of partnership and collaboration with St. Paul's School for Girls, the schools are expanding the opportunities available to students across our campus—work that will continue under the school's next head.
The president and Board of Trustees will conduct the leadership search in two phases. First, we will find an experienced interim head of school for the 2020-2021 academic year. That person will focus on transitioning the Upper School into a new building, continuing the We Are St. Paul's campaign, and maintaining academic excellence. Then, in spring of 2020, we will form a search committee to find a permanent head who will begin in the summer of 2021. This should put St. Paul's School ahead of the normal hiring cycle and allow us a nice transition. We will keep the community posted with more information.
We look forward to celebrating Dave's contributions to St. Paul's and to honoring him, his wife, Holly, and their children, Libby and John '16, for their wonderful role in our community.
Thank you for your continued support.
