Competing in the Cadet World Championships (ages 16 and 17) in Athens, Greece, last week, Kurt McHenry '19 defeated five international opponents to win the gold medal in the 101-lb. weight class, and become just the third American ever to win two Cadet World titles.
After cruising to the semifinals, McHenry met Magomed Abdurakhmanov of Russia, in a rematch of last year's semifinal bout. McHenry advanced with a 5-4 win, then controlled the championship match action against two-time Cadet World medalist and Cadet European champion Giorgi Gegelashvili of Georgia. McHenry scored five takedowns in the bout, including a four-pointer at the buzzer, to take the win, 12-4.
McHenry is a two-time Maryland Independent School state champion and earned All-American honors at the National Prep Wrestling tournament as a freshman.
