Garon Lizana '13 becomes 5th recent St. Paul's graduate awarded Fulbright Scholarship
Posted 05/30/2017 09:10AM

Garon Lizana '13, a 2017 magna cum laude graduate of Tufts University, has been awarded a Fulbright Scholarship to study for the 2017-2018 academic year in Hohhot, China. Garon is the fifth St. Paul's graduate to receive a Fulbright Scholarship since 2011.

An International Relations and Chinese double major at Tufts, Garon will use his scholarship to investigate how trends of economic modernization and integration have affected ethnically Mongolian people's social, cultural, and political identities in northern China. Garon received the Chinese Language and Literature Prize, awarded annually to a Tufts graduating senior who has demonstrated excellence in the studies of Chinese language, literature and culture. Fulbright Scholarships are the U.S. government's flagship international educational exchange program, and provide for one year of study or research abroad. Scholars are chosen for their academic merit and leadership potential.

"My time at St. Paul's was instrumental in adding a global perspective to my studies. In addition to building a strong foundation for my Chinese language skills over my four years in Upper School, I also got to explore relevant topics in classes like IB HL 20th Century World History," said Garon. "This background, along with writing and critical thinking skills I developed at St. Paul's, helped prepare me to transition towards a more specialized and in-depth path of study once I got to Tufts."

At. St. Paul's, Garon was awarded the Alumni Medal for attaining the highest GPA over four years of Upper School. He was a member of the Cum Laude Society, received the Chinese and Photography awards, and rowed on the crew team.
