Woodworking

"The woodshop can be viewed as a laboratory wherein many of the lessons that are taught in the core academic subjects are put to the test through the experience of building with wood," says Middle School woodworking teacher Doug Finkel. "The curricular crossover is especially strong in math, science and STEM-related areas. Additionally, green woodworking, with its focus on pre-industrial crafts, offers a direct connection to the subject of history. The premise of working from the source to the finished object also reinforces less tangible lessons that are a part of our School culture, such as a responsibility to our natural resources and our spiritual connection to the natural world."

Mr. Finkel is a renowned woodworking artist. Several of his works were included in the 2012 book “Turning to Art in Wood: A Creative Journey,” published in celebration of the 25th anniversary of Philadelphia’s renowned Center for Art in Wood, and one of his benches is in the permanent collection of the Smithsonian American Art Museum’s Renwick Gallery. Under his guidance, Middle School students visualize a concept, translate it to paper, and then learn the steps and tools needed to produce a finished product.
