UPPER SCHOOL AT ST. PAUL'S
At St. Paul’s our students thrive in an environment with personalized education based on their individual strengths. Our dedicated faculty work to foster an environment where boys transform into independent, curious, and creative young men. We meet each student at his level of ability and advance his pursuit of excellence in a challenging yet supportive environment. We provide our students opportunities to discover and pursue passions which prepare them for rich lives of the mind, body and spirit. By expecting them to become leaders inside and outside of the classroom, we strengthen their character and foster their capacity to analyze, care and create, while preparing them to succeed in college and beyond. Meet some of our recent graduates.
The St. Paul’s Upper School offers an excellent education, utilizing a rigorous, creative, and collaborative approach that encourages students to think deeply and act decisively in the world. With its emphasis on critical thinking, intensive student-faculty interaction, and development of the whole person, the renowned International Baccalaureate (IB) Program – offered in Grades 11 and 12 – is a fitting culmination of the St. Paul’s educational experience.
More than 120 courses at all levels of academic challenge – including 30 IB offerings – are available. Many more courses are available in coordination with St. Paul’s School for Girls. Read more about how our coordination with SPSG provides expanded opportunities academically, artistically, and socially.
St. Paul’s is an Episcopal school. Chapel is the heart of our communal life and an integral part of the educational experience we offer. Weekly Chapel services welcome, honor and respect the religious convictions of all members of the community, as a diverse religious experience enriches our life together.
Our Service Learning program enables students to learn by engaging in meaningful service with local communities, deploying their academic and life skills to address real-world issues, and link ideals with genuine needs. Upper School students must complete 60 hours of service, and our Service Learning Honor Society recognizes those whose genuine commitment to serving others merits special recognition.
The School’s student-administered Honor Code helps bring to life our mission of developing responsibility for one’s self and others. Our students are expected to uphold the Honor Code through honest, respectful and responsible participation in School life.
Athletics are a vital part of the total experience at St. Paul’s. As an extension of the academic classroom and traditional school day, many valuable lessons are learned through athletic participation – excellence, discipline, loyalty, self-confidence, managing success and failure, and sportsmanship among them.
With 47 interscholastic teams in 14 sports, there is room for the future Division I student-athlete, as well as the novice player. Our students receive the same level of personal attention in their athletic pursuits as they do in the classroom. Full-time teacher-coaches offer the leadership, guidance, and support that motivates students to work harder and achieve their personal goals. Read more about St. Paul’s Athletics.
St. Paul’s embraces performing and visual arts as vital means of fostering creativity, insight, empathy, and focus. Our singing tradition is more than 150 years old, with numerous choral groups, including the Concert Chorale which regularly performs in Europe. The theater program is coordinated with St. Paul’s School for Girls, staging three major productions each year, including a musical and a collection of one-act plays written and directed by students. Students in the visual arts hold annual gallery exhibitions, and our jazz band performs for audiences on campus and in the Baltimore community.
