Ice Hockey - Varsity
vs. St. Mary's Ryken
|Date:||December 14, 2018|
The St. Paul’s Varsity Hockey team had their first home game of the season on Friday evening in front of a rowdy crowd at Reisterstown Sportsplex. It was a quick start for the Crusaders with captain Avvi Tanasiyenko finishing his first shift with a snipe from the top of the circles, assisted by freshman Isaac Lawrence. Five minutes later junior Nick Schreibeis potted his second of the season to make it a 2-0 Crusader lead. St. Mary’s would answer with two shorthanded goals, but sophomore Davis Jones quickly got the Crusies back on top with his first of the year, followed shortly after by assistant captain George Haigley’s first of the night. The rest of the game was marked by some important Varsity firsts. Freshmen Avelo Cohen and Isaac Lawrence both notched their first Varsity goals, and senior Braeden Llewellyn, called up as an emergency back-up from JV for the non-league game, earned his first Varsity minutes giving up only one goal and making a number of awesome saves with the Crusaders killing off penalties late in the game.
Senior Timmy Cole got the start and the win for the Crusaders bringing the squad to 1-2-1 on the year. Tanasiyenko and Haigley led the scoring for the Crusies with 7 points each- 3 goals and 4 assists for Tanasiyenko and 2 goals and 5 assists for Haigley. Freshman, Isaac Lawrence had a breakout night with 4 points, adding 3 assists to his first goal, followed by two point games from Davis Jones, who had 2 goals on the night, Nick Schreibeis, who had a goal and an assist, and senior Jackson Torppey with 2 assists. Cohen’s goal, and single assists for freshman Aidan Burd and sophomore MacLean Schweizer rounded out the scoring.
The team hopes to take the momentum from their first win into the break with their annual New York trip after Lessons and Carols. The Crusaders take on the Harvey School Cavaliers at 3:45pm next Wednesday at Evarts Rink in Katonah, NY and then the John Jay Indians at 4:15pm on Thursday at Brewster Ice Arena in Brewster, New York.
