Ice Hockey - Varsity vs. Archbishop Spalding

Event Type: Regular
Advantage:Away

Date: December 6, 2018

Result:Tie
Score:3-3

Event Recap:

On Thursday evening the SP Varsity Hockey team had their first league match-up with Spalding on the road at Piney Orchard. Spalding jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the first period, scoring two goals in transition against an SP team that was a bit over-aggressive on the offensive side of the puck. The second period began with the same deficit, but a strong forechecking shift from the Torppey-Schreibeis-Hardon line led to Hardon winning a battle below the goal line and feeding Schreibeis in front to cut the Spalding lead in half. After an ice cut the Crusie’s quickly fell to 3-1 in the third, again getting caught with too many players up ice. With an 0-2 league record facing them, the team continued to work and Roscoe Eade found Avvi Tanasiyenko with a great neutral zone pass, springing the captain into the Spalding zone where he sniped a goal to make it 2-3. Two shifts later the newly formed Haigley-Tanasiyenko-Jones line wore down the Cavaliers, ending the shift with George Haigley getting credited on a goal that was ultimately batted into the net by a Spalding defenseman. The Crusaders killed off a penalty shortly after, with goaltender Timmy Cole making a number of outstanding saves to preserve the tie. Battling back for the point on the road was big for the Crusaders, and they head into their first home game this Friday at 6:00pm at Reisterstown against St. Mary’s-Ryken with a record of 0-2-1 (0-1-1).
