Basketball - MS Gold vs. Loyola Blakefield

Event Type: Regular

Date: January 10, 2019

Event Recap:

The St. Paul's Gold team was on the road yesterday against Loyola Blakefield. Loyola, probably the toughest team we will play this season, started out strong, and our Gold team had no answer. The game started with two 3-point shots back to back prompting a quick time-out to regroup. Loyola was able to build a 10 point lead midway through the first period before we were able to score. Landon Blue drove the lane for a quick basket, and that was able to calm our nerves a bit. Cadigan KImball had a beautiful short jumper, then added a free throw to give us a little spark headed into the second quarter.

After trading buckets, St. Paul's made a few strong defensive stops on our end of the court, taking Loyola out of it's game. Amir Saddler, Robbie Warder, Colin Vineberg and Tyler McGill battled under the boards, though Loyola had a large size advantage for the game. As we went to the half trailing 24-11, we needed a spark to start the second half.

Loyola came out with their full court press in the second half causing four straight turnovers, and helping them build a larger second half lead. Landon Blue again drove to the basket hard all game, and scored points off of layups, and foul shots. As the boys fought back, we had little time on the clock to mount a strong comeback. As the buzzer sounded, and the dust settled, Loyola came away with a well deserved 44-21 win over our St. Paul's Gold team. This was a good wake-up call for the boys as it showed what we need to do to both get better, and compete against bigger athletic teams. The boys will be ready to go next week as we take on Gilman.

Player of the Game - Landon Blue was a bright spot yesterday, working hard, scoring points, and playing well above his years. Though Landon is not big, he is extremely talented and a wonderful player and teammate. Keep working hard Landon, the sky's the limit for you.
