Basketball - MS Gold
vs. Boys' Latin
|Date:||December 7, 2018|
On Friday, the Gold team had their first home game of the season as we took on a scrappy and skilled Boys Latin team. From the opening tip-off, everything went well for Boys Latin as St Paul's missed their first eight shots of the game, subsequently allowing Boys Latin to run out to a 10-0 lead in the first quarter. St Paul's called time-out to regroup, and Bryce Matthews hit a layup to open the scoring for St. Paul's. Much like our game against McDonogh, the presence of Amir Saddler, Tyler McGill, Kahlil Taylor, and Ire Olasupo in the paint helped keep the game close with timely rebounds, easy put backs, and much needed blocks. What makes this team exciting is that they compete, and do not get worried when they are down.
Ryan Nelson started out by breaking down the Boys Latin press, and slashed by giving our shooters a chance to get open shots. As halftime approached, the defensive intensity picked up. Steals by Cadigan Kimball and Miles Heard helped generate much needed offense, and as the buzzer sounded, St. Paul's had a 12-11 lead. The second half started with a charge by Boys Latin. Three consecutive baskets helped Boys Latin stretch their lead, but a beautiful NBA step to the basket layup by Jason Nelson, and runner by Bryce Matthews put St. Paul's in the lead as we started the 4th quarter. Though we played well, the quarter belonged to Bryce Matthews. Down by one late in the game, Bryce hits a long 3 pointer to put us up by two, then a gorgeous drive by Landon Blue put us in front by 4 points late. Then, we called a play called "Squeeze", which is a full court press, and we were able to create a turnover. After a missed shot, then a basket by Boys Latin, Bryce Matthews was fouled, and calmly, and cool as a pickle, Bryce preceded to knock down both shots, nothing but net. After a strong defensive stand, the game ended when Tyler McGill intercepted a Boys Latin inbounds pass, and ran out the clock to claim a 30-27 victory. What a great game, what a strong comeback from this exciting team, your St. Paul's Gold Basketball team.
