Result:Win

Event Recap:

After only one full team practice in the past twenty days, the Fresh/Soph team finally got a chance to play its first conference game of the season on Wednesday when they travelled to Southeast Baltimore to play the Fresh/Soph team at Archbishop Curley.  Not knowing what we may remember on offense and defense, the plan was to play as hard as we could for as long as we could.  While the first quarter started slow and the scored tied at 2 almost halfway through the quarter, the Crusaders got going as a result of their press.  Some easy baskets were made, and the quarter ended with SPS ahead 9 – 5. The intensity stayed up at the beginning of the 2nd quarter which saw the Crusaders up 20 – 10 at one point.  However, our legs began to tire, and Curley crept back to 22 – 14 at halftime.  Curley made another push at the beginning of the third period to pull within one point but SPS would not relinquish the lead and led 34 – 25 heading to the 4th quarter.  The 4th quarter never really got close and the Crusaders would notch their first conference win.

This was very much a team win.  While there were many coaching opportunities regarding technique and decision making, the players did their best to execute the game plan.  Seven different players scored, Matthew Marino, Aiden Gould, Michael Smyth, Gavin Clary, Max Rottinghaus, Brody Atkinson, and Thomas Magnusson.  Of these, 6 scored at least 5 points and only one player was in double figures.  SPS outrebounded Curley 38 – 22 and dove to the floor for a loose ball on at least a half dozen occasions.  The Crusaders also attempted to take several charges, which just weren’t being whistled as fouls today; sorry Brody.

The team has a quick turn around with a game this Friday at 4:30 pm against Saints Peter & Paul in Kinsolving Gym.  The team also knows that many of you will be at the wrestling meet on Friday upstairs, but are hoping that some of you can come downstairs for a few minutes to route the team to a perfect week.
