Event Recap:

The Crusaders traveled Monday afternoon to Annapolis for a rematch with The Key School who defeated SPS in the first game of the season by only four points. The game started slowly offensively with neither team mounting much of an offense. The Crusaders offense was shaky, but their defense has been much improved as of late, and the quarter ended 8 – 6 in favor of the Zags. The second quarter saw the offense pick up a little with both big men, Christian Richter and Caleb Newton getting on the scoreboard. The half ended with SPS still down only two, 19 – 17. Determined to stay close, SPS came out after halftime even stronger on defense holding the Zags to 7 points while scoring 10 of their own to end the 3rd up by two points.

The fourth quarter remained close as the Zags finally hit a 3-point shot only to be hit with a dagger 3 by Braden Kletz. Max Watkinson added his second three of the half and SPS was ahead by one point with under one minute to play. After missing the front end of a one and one, SPS gave the ball back to the Zags and now needed to get a stop. Unfortunately, the Zags worked to get an open shot with 12 seconds left to regain the lead. But, as the team has rehearsed in practice many times this winter, Braeden Klausner ripped the ball out of the net and fired an in-bounds pass to Braden Kletz who found a sprinting Max Watkinson open up the sideline who took it to the rack and finished through major contact for a one-point lead with 3 seconds left on the clock. As the Zags called timeout to stop the clock with 1.7 seconds left in the hopes of getting off a final shot, the Crusaders were awarded 2 foul shots for a technical foul on the hosts who were out of timeouts. All that was left was for Max to make both and when Matthew Meck caught the in-bounds pass the game was over.

Fresh/Soph has now won three consecutive games and closes out its home schedule this Wednesday afternoon against Concordia Prep in Pollock Gymnasium at 4:15pm. If you have the time, feel free to come out and support the team on its quest for the JV C Conference playoffs.
