Basketball - Fresh/Soph
vs. Concordia Prep
|Date:||February 6, 2019|
The Crusaders played their last home game of the season Wednesday in Pollock Gymnasium vs Concordia Prep. Concordia came to Brooklandville feeling confident after winning at their place earlier this season by 22 points. However, SPS was determined to make a statement from the start of this one on the strength of outstanding team defense coupled with deliberate and disciplined offense. Five players, Braden Kletz, Timmy Wilcox, Matthew Meck, Max Watkinson, and Caleb Newton all scored in the first quarter while holding Concordia to one made basket. The second quarter began with SPS up 14 – 7 and the Crusaders continued their stingy defense holding Concordia again to only one made basket. At halftime the score was 24 – 12 in favor of SPS.
The Crusaders came out in the second half knowing that Concordia would go to an all-out pressure strategy and that is what happened. Some very aggressive play combined with few foul calls allowed Concordia to come all the way back and take the lead. However, SPS would have the ball down 2 for the first time in the game and worked the ball for a final shot. Matthew Meck drove hard to the paint and kicked the ball out to Max who buried a 3 at the buzzer to put the Crusaders back up one entering the final quarter. The fourth quarter was a war and with SPS up 2 with just 7 seconds left they repelled a last-ditch effort by Concordia to avenge their early season defeat.
Fresh/Soph has now won three consecutive games in the JV C conference and 4 overall. The team has a quick turn-around with a non-conference game Thursday at Baltimore Lab School. Fresh/Soph closes out its quest for the JV C Conference playoffs next week with games at Archbishop Curley and Park.
