Basketball - JV
vs. Harford Technical High School
|Date:||January 13, 2020|
The Crusies went North yesterday to take on the Cobras of Harford Tech. With several league games under our belt we were looking forward to the opportunity to take on an out of conference team for some different competition. The boys came out strong, attacking offensively and not giving up anything easy on the defensive end. We took advantage of the fact that they wanted to play us man, moving the ball and staying active on the perimeter, 11 of our 14 points in the first quarter were from great inside looks in the paint or foul shots after getting hit in the post. Our Sophomore starting bigs Garrison Curry and Cole Bloom combined for 6 down low and Curry picked up a block or two (and he certainly wasn't done for the day). Our Freshmen made their presence known as well as Cam Nelson and Nate Livingston slashed from the wings to pick up 2 each, but Daniel Davis really put the exclamation mark on the quarter hitting a buzzer beater 3 in the corner to give us a 14 - 4 lead going into the second quarter.
The second quarter showed much of the same offensive productivity as the first quarter. Cole Bloom was unstoppable down low finishing 4 contested layups clearly not bothered by the contact. Defensively, the home team was still struggling to pick apart our zone and we managed to hold them to just 6 points in the 2nd quarter to give us a 27 - 10 lead after the first half.
We knew the Cobras weren't going to give up with a whole half to play, and they came out in a new press that gave us trouble in the first few minutes of the third quarter. After a timeout to make the adjustment our 9th grade duards Josh Stinespring and Cam Nelson had no problem beating the press to get our offense going in the half court. Cam and Curry were getting us good looks in the paint, but the Cobras put the no layup rule in effect and they were forced to pick up their combined 4 from the line. Sophomore shooting guard John Padousis found his stroke from the wing and knocked down two big 3's.
In the 4th we got everyone in off the bench and not only did they close out to hold on for the win, but they continued to get great looks on offense. Cam Nelson continued to attack off the dribble getting to the line and coming up big with a few blocks on the defensive end. Sophomore big Grant English got in and had a couple big blocks as well as lay up at the end to really seal the deal. Braeden Kletz also came in strong off the bench handling the ball well and running our offense from the point. He picked up 4 from driving into the paint and while the Cobras were able to pick up more buckets in the 4th it wasn't enough and the Crusies held on for the win.
The final score was 48 - 26 in favor of St. Paul's. The boys are back at it tomorrow in practice to prepare for another road game Wednesday against conference opponent Severn.
