Event Recap:

On Friday evening the JV basketball team welcomed tough conference opponent St. Mary’s to Pollack gym for a heated rematch. The last time we saw them was down in Annapolis and the Saints tried to make a comeback late in the 4th, but the Crusaders managed to hold them off. Looking for revenge, the visiting team got after it from the tip, but we came out in our normal, high energy fashion and held our own in the first quarter. Our offensive charge was led by John Padousis who was able to penetrate their man defense and get to the hoop for 5 tough layups, Jack Keenan stepped up and on top of his usual display of lock down D he got to the rack twice making one layup and picking up another point from the foul line. It was 17-11 by the end of the first, but our scoring slowed down in the final minutes after St. Mary’s switched to a zone. We had practiced beating their zone in practice, but their length was tougher in game and they managed to force a couple turnovers and really slow down our offensive efforts. The Saints held us to just foul shots in the 2nd quarter, and we picked up 4 points from John, Jack, and Cole Bloom. While our offense was limited in the 2nd, St. Mary’s offense exploded for 25 points; stretching out our defense by knocking down a few 3’s and then working us inside with their bigs. At halftime the score was 21-36, but SP knew what changes needed to be made in the 2nd half. St. Mary’s was using their size to out rebound us on both ends, and we were rushing our offense after beating their press and not getting good looks. After addressing the changes we took the court in the 3rd to turn things around. We managed to hold the Saints to 10 points in the 3rd once we put our full court press in, but still struggled to get our offense going and only picked up 7 points, one of them being a huge 3 for Jack Keenan to pick up his first of the season. Down 28-45 going into the 4th the Crusies dug deep and started to come back, one possession at a time. Everyone that saw minutes late in the game left it all out on the court, and that was evident by the number of turnovers we forced and loose balls we got on the floor for. We effectively shut their offense down holding them to just 7 points, 2 of them coming from the foul line when we were forced to foul late to stop the clock. The effort was there on offense too, and everyone finally started rebounding and doing their part to beat the press. We put up 22 points in the 4th quarter all from Ayden Jett and John Padousis. The freshman and sophomore sharpshooters each knocked down three contested 3’s from beyond the arc, and got to the basket for a tough layup. Down 3 with less than 5 seconds to go and the student section going absolutely wild we in bounded the ball one last time trying to get it to either John or Ayden for 3, but the Saints managed to slow us enough that we had to fire up a half-court prayer and it fell short. The visiting team won 53-50, but SP showed they could battle back from a 15 point deficit at the half and nearly get the win. Due to the snow day on Monday the Crusies missed their 2nd game with Curley and now will get ready to go on the road to face St. john’s one last time before hopefully gearing up for the playoffs.
