Basketball - JV vs. Chapelgate Christian Academy

Event Type: Regular

Date: January 23, 2019

Event Recap:

The JV hoops squad hit the road yesterday to take on conference opponent Chapelgate Christian Academy. The last time we played the yellow jackets was early season back in November so the Crusies had to be ready for anything. We came out and played man defense to try and pressure them early, but the home team was able to get a few buckets putting up 7 in the first quarter. It was our bigs on the inside (Sam English, Jack Mitchell, and Cole Bloom) who got the initial lead and with a pair of strong drives from guards Kylen Austen and John Padousis the Crusaders had 13 going into the 2nd. Both teams offenses were stymied in the 2nd quarter as defensive adjustments were made. Sophomore point guard Jack Keenan didn’t let his hurt ankle get in the way and broke out for 2 fast break layups to maintain the lead, one of them sparked by a monster block from Kylen Austen. At the half we made a few more defensive changes and drew up ways to attack their zone. The Crusies came out ready to play smart basketball with a plan of attack to put the home team away. Our guards started to attack their zone off the dribble which gave Cole Bloom plenty of looks down low. The Crusaders also held it down on defense forcing turnovers in our full court press and energized by vocal sophomore forwards Mark Matthews and Sam English. With a 10 point lead going into the final quarter the boys knew they just had to stay composed and close out the win. The boys did just that and with the Yellow jackets on their heels we started to get looks from everywhere on the floor. The visitors played great team basketball as SP moved the ball and got everyone a touch for wide open looks. The final score was 53-41, and it was a great team win where everyone saw minutes and helped secure the win. The JV team will have just one practice before we get back on the road Friday to take on Severn on their home court.
