Event Type: Regular
Advantage:Home

Date: January 19, 2019

Result:Loss
Score:35-52

Event Recap:

On Saturday in the Pollock Gym, JV basketball took on Boys Latin for an out of conference rivalry game. SP was ready for the A-conference opponent and came out playing aggressive defense from the jump. The Lakers managed to get the ball inside early to put up 10 by the end of the first, but sophomores Jack Keenan, Sam English, and Mark Matthews were able to get some great looks off cuts to get 7 points on the board. In the 2nd quarter the tide shifted and the Crusaders offense woke up. The home team was picking apart the Laker’s man defense; getting open back cuts, feeding the freshman Cole Bloom in the post, and a great drive from the perimeter by Kylen Austin. Going into the half the Crusies had the A-conference visitors on their heels with a score of 19-17. In the 3rd quarter BL got into a rhythm moving the ball more and getting the majority of their points from inside the paint feeding their big men. After a very productive 2nd quarter, the Lakers had to adjust to a zone defense to slow down the Crusader’s offense. There were a couple times in the 3rd when it looked like the Lakers could pull away, but both times freshman John Padousis pulled up from deep 3-range to knock down a pair of triples to keep the home team in the game. After an outstanding 3 quarters of basketball, the visiting team’s size finally started to wear on the Crusaders. BL was able to keep feeding the post and work a 2-man game with their bigs inside to extend their lead to 10 with a few minutes left to play. St. Paul’s never backed down on defense going after the ball on every play, but with the Lakers still getting looks inside SP wasn’t able to close the gap. While the final score was 52-35, that certainly doesn’t tell the whole story. The Crusaders held their own and almost upset a competitive A-conference team. The boys from Brooklandville are 7-1 in the B-conference, and are in a 3-way tie for first. The JV squad is back to league play this week with two games on the road against Chapelgate Wednesday, and Severn on Friday.
