Basketball - Varsity
vs. St. John's Catholic Prep
|Date:||February 13, 2019|
St. Paul’s traveled to Frederick to yesterday to take on fellow playoff contender St. John’s. The host team played tough and earned themselves a seven point half time lead that was fueled by a 19 point first quarter. The Crusader’s would change the pace of the game by exploring their defensive options and playing man to man in the second half of the game., a non-traditional move as far as this year’s schemes go. The game turned into a back and forth battle in the second half that resulted in St. Paul’s having the ball down by two with just 15 seconds remaining to play. The ball would get passed around until it eventually found senior Leo Kelly who aggressively drove to the basket and floated in a shot as time expired, forcing overtime. Leo’s fellow seniors dominated the second half of play offensively, lead by Troy Barthelme. He would finish the game with a career high 29 points, 26 of which came in the second half and overtime. He showed his versatility by knocking down clutch long range jump shots and working hard in the post in a clutch performance. The win helped secure a first place regular season finish for the Crusader’s. St. Paul’s will wrap up the league play tomorrow at Archbishop Curley.
