vs. St. Mary's
|Date:||February 8, 2019|
The Crusader’s hosted their final regular season home game last Friday evening. They honored a senior class that included Grant Greenstein, Phil Stokes, Leo Kelly, Troy Barthelme, and Ziggy Reid. All five seniors would start and score on the way to a 59-50 victory over league foe St. Mary’s. The victory earned St. Paul’s a bye in the first round of the playoffs and guaranteed one more home game for the highly successful class of 2019. After an energetic start St. Paul’s would experience a stretch in the first half where they struggled to score. That ended in third quarter thanks to Troy Barthelme who would drain three long range shots in the quarter that helped extend the St. Paul’s lead to 10 points heading into the fourth quarter. It would continue to rain three’s in the final frame as Ziggy Reid and Anthony Smaldore would follow Barthelme’s lead. The two proceed to knock down three shots from behind the arc themselves, bringing the Crusader’s long distance makes to 11 on the game. While the win was significant, Coach Hahn was much happier with something else he deems vital to success. Togetherness. “This group of seniors has an unbelievable bond. I hope I was able to contribute and make this year special for them. We talk a lot about the value of building friendship through our sport. While the details of this year might slowly fade away I know their friendships will not. Regardless of what happens in the playoff’s that already makes them champions. So does the example they set for the future of St. Paul’s basketball.”
With a win in one of their final two games this week the Crusader’s would lock up the number one seed in the tournament and a regular season title. Please be ready to support them in their playoff game at St. Paul’s on Thursday, 2/21.
