vs. Friends School

Friends School hosted St. Paul’s on Friday night, re-opening MIAA B conference play for both teams. The visiting Crusaders started out the night pounding the ball inside to senior Forwards Ziggy Reid and Troy Barthelme, who would finish with 20 and 19 points respectively. The two would also combine for 17 rebounds in the contest that helped St. Paul’s control the first three quarters carrying a 57-37 lead into the final frame.
Coach Kyle Harmon’s host squad wouldn’t give up very easily. They continued to play hard and knock down long range shots in the final 8 minutes of play, cutting the St. Paul’s lead to within in two possessions with 90 seconds to play. Guards Derry and Kirkwood lead the charge, each scoring 20 points in the contest. J.P. Vassor, who finished with 12 points, hit a couple of key three point shots in the fourth the cut into the lead.
Sophomore point guard Anthony Smaldore was able to settle St. Paul’s back down to hold on for a 71-66 victory. Smaldore was extremely consistent on the offensive end of the floor, orchestrating offensive sets that allowed the Crusader’s to get the ball to their Forward’s in key spots. Once the double teams came the Sophomore was able to knock down open jump shots and finished with 17 total points and five assists.
St. Paul’s moves to 7-5 on the year (2-1 in MIAA play) and has a key week of conference play upcoming that includes four games next week.
