|Basketball - Varsity Bobcat Classic @ Greensboro NC|
|Date:||December 20, 2018|
St. Paul’s Varsity basketball team traveled to Greensboro, North Carolina, over the winter break to participate in the Piedmont Bobcat Classic. They would tip off play on Thursday December 20th against the University School from Florida. The game got off to a quick start with the opposing team making five 3 point shots in the first quarter to open up a four point lead. St. Paul’s would adjust in the second frame and outscore their opponents by 12 to carry an eight point lead into the half. The Crusaders would clamp down defensively in fourth quarter to pull away for a 72-59 first round win. Ziggy Reid led all scorers with 25 points that included a perfect outing from the free throw line. Sophomore point guard Anthony Smaldore posted a career high 19 points in the game.
The semi-final matchup placed the boys from Brooklandville up against North Carolina’s West Meck High School. St. Paul’s showed they could win in a different fashion by shutting down their opponents from the start of the game. They used a 1-3-1 zone defense to hold their opponents to just 14 first half points and only four field goals. St. Paul’s would maintain a double digit lead throughout the second half and cruise to 56-42 victory that was paced by Senior forward Troy Barthelme who had a game high 21 points.
The Crusaders would enter the championship game up against 2017 Virginia State Champions Laudon Valley High School. The Crusaders struggled early and were never able to gain any offensive energy, posting just 12 first half points. Laudon Valley would spread the floor in the second half and effectively run some clock and convert baskets at the end of long possessions that thwarted any thoughts of a come back on the part of St.Paul’s who didn’t have a player in double figures for the game. Laudon Valley received double digit efforts from four different players to defeat the Crusaders 64-27 in the tournament championship.
