For New Parents

Traditions

Early in the school year, the Parents Association hosts an Autumn Cheer Reception, a great opportunity for St. Paul's parents to eat, drink, and meet other parents, faculty, and staff involved in the St. Paul's community..

Lessons & Carols at Old St. Paul's Church: students, teachers, faculty and administration gather annually in December at the School's founding church, Old St. Paul's in Baltimore, for a Christmas service of lessons and carols.

Brooklandwood Holiday Decorations are provided each year by the Parents' Association.

The Holiday Bazaar in the Lower School provides children the opportunity to shop for inexpensive, and often homemade, gifts for family and friends.

Lower School Field Day is held in May and is a time for children to compete for points for either the Blue or Gold teams.

Third grade performs the May Pole Dance the first Tuesday in May on the lawn of Brooklandwood.

The Victory Bell, which stands on the hill overlooking the lower athletic fields, is rung after a St. Paul's athletic team defeats an opponent.

Upper School Spirit Day is typically held prior to the last home varsity football game.

Seniors have a number of traditions:

  • They present speeches on a topic of their choice in chapel. Speeches are typically reflective, describing personal challenges and growth.
  • They embark on a three-week-long independent study project in May and present their findings to the faculty shortly before graduation
  • They run the Senior Chapel in April; afterwards, underclassmen form a gauntlet in their honor as they leave the Chapel
  • Seniors graduate in white dinner jackets as opposed to caps and gowns
  • The evening before their Commencement (graduation) ceremony, a baccalaureate service is held for seniors at Old St. Paul's Church.

Special community chapel services during the year include a Blessing of the Animals in the fall, Christmas Eve services, and a Good Friday and Easter sunrise service.
