Upper School summer reading information now available

Dear Parents:

Effective communication is a vital aspect of each of our missions to "seek truth, knowledge and excellence" in the world around us. Being able to share our insights with others so that we might benefit from our collective experiences is critical to becoming lifelong learners. One way in which we can engage in this process more effectively is to be avid readers and to share the questions and insights we’ve gained with others in our community.

That said, we are once again asking students to participate in the summer reading program. The book discussion group continues to be at the heart of this plan. Each student will be required to read at least one book from the list of sponsored texts and participate in the subsequent discussion group led by the book’s sponsor. The discussions will take place on Moodle, on Facebook, or in person, depending on the book. Details regarding texts, times and group leaders can be found at the online link that is included in this email. Each boy should enter the site and then follow the specific instructions provided for each discussion, and participate thoughtfully and earnestly. Students may use electronic or hard copy versions of texts as they prefer. Locally, Ivy Bookshop offers a 10% discount to students who make their summer reading purchases there; mention the St. Paul's summer reading program to receive the discount.

The books offered this summer range from poetry to memoir to new textualities like blogs and graphic novels. We are confident that each student will be able to find something that appeals to his particular tastes and stretches him as a learner. Certainly, we encourage the boys to read as many books and to participate in as many discussions as they would like, thus each additional book that a student reads will earn him extra credit in his first quarter of English.

In addition to completing one text and participating in its discussion, we will, near summer's end, be emailing links to a short, school-wide text that all students should read in order to prepare for the first piece of writing in their English class upon their return to school. On behalf of the English department, we sincerely hope that participation in this program allows your son to share with other readers in the St. Paul's community, both adults and peers. We have enjoyed this format over the last few years, and are optimistic that this summer's discussion proves equally enjoyable and thought-provoking.

Here's to a happy, rejuvenating summer full of great reading!

On May 3-4 hundreds of alumni returned to campus for Blue-Gold Reunion Weekend. Mark Walsh ’72 kicked off the festivities with a rousing address to Upper School assembly about the entrepreneurial skills needed for successful start-ups. The Alumni Association bestowed four awards at the Headmaster’s Lunch: Distinguished Alumnus to Richard A. Moore ’53; Outstanding Alumnus to Guy M. McKhann II ’80; Distinguished Young Alumnus to John W. Steele ’03; and Larry M. Smith, Sr., was made an Honorary Alumnus. Read more about the impressive achievements of these four Crusaders.

The afternoon saw our sixth-graders lead campus tours and interview the award-winners for the alumni oral-history video project. Students and alumni then met at the Victory Bell, sporting banners and flags to back the lacrosse team in a crucial match against Gilman. A highlight was the resurrection of the cannon that for years fired to mark a Crusader score—“Big Bertha,” donated by Bill Beale ’63, once again boomed from the hilltop, thanks to the chemical wizardry of our Science department’s Dr. David Chalfoun.

Many alumni and their families gathered Friday evening under the tent on Hamilton Lawn, on the north side of Brooklandwood, for post-game cocktails. Saturday saw vigorous alumni tennis and the traditional alumni lacrosse game, to which all were invited to play or laugh at those who did. The shortage of players prompted your alumni director to suit up, though the only evidence of his participation is the sideline photograph that captured him looking justifiably alarmed. Bob Tarring ’64 captured the distinction of most experienced combatant, while History Dept. Chair Alec Shipley ’89 found himself futilely trying to stop his son, Jake Shipley ’10, from scoring. Dozens of panting athletes made their way up the hill to the tent for a post-game cookout, followed by a varsity baseball win over John Carroll. The weekend was capped off by our five-year reunion class dinners, on and off campus. Click here for a Blue-Gold Reunion Weekend photo gallery.

Lacrosse

Coming off one of the most challenging seasons in St. Paul's lacrosse history with a 4-15 record in 2012, the 2013 varsity lacrosse team earned the School's 55th trip to the MSA/MIAA playoffs the old-fashioned way, with hard work and a team-first attitude. The amazing turnaround season was led by a Crusader team comprised of 13 seniors, 19 juniors, four sophomores, and a freshman. Team captains Mike Mayer, Travis Wood, and Andrew Nelson led the team to a successful comeback season throughout the tough out-of-conference and MIAA schedule.

After opening up with a win over Anne Arundel County power Severna Park 18-5, St. Paul’s rattled off 10 straight wins vs. out-of-conference opponents including Hill Academy from Canada, Cape Henry Collegiate, Haverford, Georgetown Prep, Hereford, Fallston, Cherry Creek, Cape Henlopen, Bullis, and Episcopal, among others, heading into the grueling MIAA schedule.

St. Paul's lost a tough one to defending champion Calvert Hall in the league opener 13-12, but then rolled to five straight league wins over Spalding, Loyola, Severn, St. Mary’s, and Mt. St. Joe to wrap up a playoff berth early.

Next up for the Crusies were the Big Three: McDonogh, Gilman, and Boys’ Latin. St. Paul’s traveled to McDonogh first and lost a heart-breaking 11-10 game in overtime. Gilman came to Brooklandville for Blue-Gold Day and lost an epic, high-scoring tilt to the rival Greyhounds 15-13. Lastly, #1 ranked Boys’ Latin knocked off the Crusies in the regular season finale, 13-8, in the 94th meeting between the two rivals. St. Paul’s finished the regular season with a 16-4 overall record, 5-4 in the MIAA, and a #5 seeding in the MIAA playoffs.

In the quarterfinals, the Crusaders were faced with the challenge of traveling to defending champion Calvert Hall. The Cards were led by faceoff specialist and USA U-19 Team player Stephen Kelly, who seemed to will his team to a hard fought 10-8 victory, ending the St. Paul’s season.

Season highlights included; Mikey Wynne breaking the School’s single-season goals record with 67 (and recording 90 overall points), Carter Flaig registering 82 points on 49 goals and 33 assists, Mike D'Amelio recording 267 faceoff wins to go along with a team leading 164 groundballs. Additionally, D'Amelio broke what is thought to be a School single-game record for faceoffs (25) and groundballs (22) in a victory over Severn.

Coach Brocato attributes the successful turnaround season to an outstanding coaching staff and seniors Mike Mayer, Travis Wood, Andrew Nelson, AJ Fradkin, Mike D’Amelio, Greg Louzan, Ben Linkous, Casey Larkin, Jake Carbone, Austin Butcher, Raymond Schulmeyer, Walker Sawers, and Mark Stansky, who maintained positive team spirit and chemistry, and will be sorely missed.

Baseball

St. Paul’s Varsity Baseball completed the season with an 8-12 record overall and a 6-10 record in the A conference. St. Paul’s season included wins over league rivals Loyola, Mount St. Josephs, and Spalding. Unfortunately, a late season loss to Archbishop Curley kept the Crusaders from qualifying for the playoffs by one game. Other season highlights included their spring break trip to Fort Lauderdale where they won one of four games against some of Florida’s best high school competition. Juniors Keifer Rawlings and Jamal Wade were honored as all-MIAA selections by the A conference coaches. Seniors Austin Sutor and Jonathan Lucido were selected to play for the North Region in the MSABC Classic. Wade and fellow Junior Bennett Briante were picked to play in the MSABC’s Junior classic. Sutor, Lucido, as well as seniors Dean Philip, Jayson Brown, and Isaiah Rose completed very successful careers for St. Paul’s.

Golf

This season was an exciting one for the St. Paul's Varsity Golf team. It became clear as the spring progressed that there were some exceptional young golfers in the Upper School with a solid balance of veteran leadership and experience. Senior Conner Antlitz led the way at #1 and was the team's Wake Forest Cup winner, the SP Golf Program's most prestigious award. Junior Thomas Carroll was the Spirit Award winner, always demonstrating excellent course etiquette and a strong work ethic, leading to multiple wins throughout the season. Junior Jordan Duke also brought valuable experience and low scoring, and sophomores Michael James and Wynn Geis returned for their 2nd seasons on Varsity, bringing great competitiveness and multiple winning rounds. The most well represented grade though was the Class of 2016. Freshmen Tommy Kearney, Daniel Hogge, Brett Wakeman, Campbell Shelhoss and Ben Morris all brought an outstanding energy and passion for the game which will serve the program very well in years to come. The team had a tough overall record this year and missed the playoffs, but it was clear to the coaching staff that a championship nucleus is definitely in place for near future. It was a successful season in that the boys made great improvements and were competitive in far more matches than their record indicated, with two being decided by just one point. Congratulations to the team on their season and good luck to Conner as he moves on to Salisbury next year. The future is bright for golf so be sure to stay tuned next spring!

Crew
The 2013 season for the St. Paul’s rowing team was a tumultuous one full of sacrifice, hard work, and a fairy tale ending. The SP rowers have to contend routinely with some of the worst rowing conditions the eastern seaboard can provide, but all levels rose to the challenge once again. Despite limited training time due to the aforementioned weather, the team competed at a high level, winning races at both the 3rd and 5th Manny Flick Regattas, the Baltimore Championships, and stacked up well against their larger team counterparts in a dual meet with DeMatha, and the season’s final non-championship regatta at St. Andrew’s School in Delaware. The team capped off their hard work and perseverance with an excellent showing at the Stotesbury Regatta in Philadelphia. The freshmen placed 30 out of 45 teams, the junior 4 qualified for the semi-finals and ended up 8th out of 64 teams, and the senior four fought hard and placed 34th out of 56 teams. The lightweight four (Teddy Van Beek, Liam Emmart, Timmy Peters, Keegan O’Donnell, Chris Acker) claimed third place out of 36 teams via an intense push over the last 150 meters. Their bronze medal is the first medal in the 13-year history of the St. Paul’s boy’s rowing program and provided a fantastic end to an otherwise extremely challenging season.

Tennis (by Austin Burt '15)

After missing the team playoffs, the Crusaders looked to make some noise in the individual MIAA tournament.

In the second singles spot, junior Jack Hamed ’14 defeated his opponent from Park in the first round to advance to the quarterfinals. However, Jack would then lose to a competitor from Gilman. Senior Tommy Hauver advanced into the quarterfinals before falling. In the number one doubles spot, Sota Fukashima and Jake Hooper defeated a team from Loyola in the quarterfinals before falling in the semifinals. Hunter Ostad and Walker Halstad represented St. Paul’s in the number two doubles spot. They received a bye in the first round and then defeated competitors from Loyola in the quarterfinals. After that they defeated the team from Friends in the semifinals to go to the championship, before falling to the team from Gilman.

Hamilton Lawn renovation honors history while looking to the future

Thanks to the leadership and generosity of the parents of the Class of 2013, along with members of the Hamilton family, St. Paul’s recently completed much needed improvements to the Hamilton Lawn. Dedicated in 2008 in honor of former Headmaster George Hamilton, the Hamilton Lawn is bounded by the Brooklandwood circle and is the site of numerous events, most importantly Commencement.

The multi-phase project incorporated renovation of the steps at the north end of the lawn; addition of a low site wall extending from the steps to the lawn; and removal of existing cedar trees screening Brooklandwood from the campus entrance on Falls Road that were replaced with large shade trees and shrubs. Additionally, a custom shade system was designed and will be put in place during graduation and other campus events to enhance guests’ comfort.

The Senior Parent Gift Committee, co-chaired by Michele and Bob Heacox and Gill and Clayton Shelhoss, generated support from more than 75 percent of the senior class parents and exceeded the effort’s goal of $155,000. Committee members were: Shari and Brian Nelson; Lora and Donald Peters; Kim and Ted Plass; and Kim and Tim Sauter.

The overall plan was shaped by Jamie Brown '91, a landscape architect and present parent, who was especially concerned with maintaining the historic elements of the lawn area.

Bryan Loane '81 designed and constructed the temporary shade structure, and Ted Carter '02 oversaw plantings, while Herb Dripps, a School grandparent and the builder of Fisher Hall, provided consultation regarding work on the stairs and wall that now better define the garden at the north end of the Lawn.

At the June 6 rededication of the Lawn, Headmaster Tom Reid recognized George Hamilton’s daughters in attendance, Welby Loane and Diane Boynton. In addition, the Committee surprised Mr. Reid and his wife, Ann, with the unveiling of a pair of teak benches. Inscribed in the Reids’ honor, the benches will overlook the Lawn from the porch of Brooklandwood.

"Where the Rubber meets the Road:" STEM Club entry completes Kinetic Sculpture Race

After months of planning, weeks of building, and days of testing, Crusader Gator, the St. Paul’s Schools’ entry in the Kinetic Sculpture Race, successfully completed the course on May 4.

Kinetic Sculptures are amphibious, human-powered works of art custom built for the race. Each May, the American Visionary Art Museum hosts the East Coast Kinetic Sculpture Race Championship through the streets of downtown Baltimore and across the waters of the Inner Harbor. The eight-hour race covers 15 miles—mostly on pavement, but also including a trip into the Chesapeake Bay and through mud and sand.

Students in the STEM Club have been working on the St. Paul’s entry with Director of STEM Initiatives Mick Scott since near the beginning of the school year.

“Engineering is the practical application of science and math,” said Mr. Scott, who was assisted by Middle School woodworking teacher Doug Finkel. “The STEM lab gives students real problems, where they first come up with theoretical design solutions, and then actually build and implement those solutions. It’s where the rubber meets the road – literally, with this project.”

Congratulations to students Jackson Doughty, Adam Glinowiecki, Darby Coyne, Andrew DiFurio, and Karl Nasrallah, who built and manned the sculpture. Upper School art students from SPSG designed and crafted the Crusader Gator artwork that adorned the entry, as well as the T-shirts crew members wore.

Following the race, the kinetic sculpture has become a familiar presence around campus, turning up outside each of the schools and on the porch of Brooklandwood. Mr. Scott hopes its visibility will prompt even greater participation in STEM Club next year.
