The St. Paul's School
Parents' Association Board Meeting
Monday, December 1, 2014
Guest:Dr. Joel Coleman, Upper School Head, addressed the group concerning the IB (International Baccalaureate) Program. This program is problem-based, hands-on and student-centered; it fits our kids and the school. The IB Program is based on an international view of the world. It tests what the students know, not what they don't know. The IB is a program, not just a series of tests. There are higher level and standard level courses, with a balance between them.Theory of Knowledge – thinking about thinking – is the closest thing to philosophy. There is an extended essay between junior summer and senior year; past topics included invasive crab species in the Delaware Bay and private school tuition and the cost of living.Colleges like these projects.Generally speaking, IB is as well known by colleges as AP, but that depends on the school.Colleges want kids to take the most difficult courses they can and for us that is IB.These courses are harder than regular classes, however they make the boys able to think and that is what college teaches. An IB schedule consists of six subjects, one being in the arts; or a student can double up without the art. Some boys are taking AP classes at SPSG; there are no girls doing the full IB.Every junior and senior take some IB courses.Exams are 50% of the grade but there are other components – essays, projects.Exams are not generally multiple choice, they are thinking exams and given in May.The IB can help a student get into an international school.College credit for IB courses depends on the school.Anyone wanting more information on the IB may contact Dr. Coleman or find further information on the school website.
