The St. Paul's School
Parents' Association Board Meeting
Monday, November 3, 2014
Diversity Initiatives: Guest Keiffer Mitchell, US government and politics teacher and MS football coach, as well as admissions, joined the meeting to discuss diversity initiatives at SPS.Diversity is one of the five pillars of the strategic plan. The message is that diversity is not just black and white or ethnicities; it encompasses socio-economics, gender, etc. There are several groups that meet regularly that many may not be aware of – African American Student Affinity Lunches, Jewish Student Affinity Group, Middle School Cultural Awareness Group. Two seniors have been selected to participate in the Beautillion Scholars Program representing St. Paul's.This program is led by the Alpha Phi Alpha fraternity which is a historic African American national fraternity and centers on young minority men who have demonstrated strong academic and leadership potential. The Crusader 2 Crusader mentoring program is just getting off the ground. With the help of faculty and staff, LS, MS and US students have been identified as mentees.US students have been identified to act as mentors for the students. We are in the process of recruiting a few alums to assist also.Any parents who would like to sponsor an activity or assist in being a mentor are welcome. Some upcoming activities are:2nd Annual African American Family Thanksgiving Pot Luck Dinner on November 25; Diversity Community Forums TBD; US King Vision Day in January 2015; MS MLK Assembly on January 16, 2015; and Jewish Family Seder in Spring, 2015.
Members-At-Large:A motion was made by Deanna to vote in all nominated Members-At-Large; seconded by Joyce and followed by a unanimous vote.
Annual Fund:We need to vote on a project; a suggestion was made that the sound system at Tullai Field be repaired/replaced.After some discussion, this vote has been tabled until a future meeting.
The Philanthropy Office has requested that the PA sponsor a large fundraiser such as a black tie gala, 5K run, fashion show, casino night, etc. possibly every two years and not meant to compete with the Alumni Bull Roast.Much discussion ensued on this topic which resulted in the decision to have Kevin Sottak attend a future meeting to further explain what exactly his office is looking for.
Make-A-Wish:Discussed how the distribution is decided. The PA has a surplus of money and a few years ago it was decided to set aside $30,000 of it to spend down some of the surplus. The question is whether to give each school $1,000 per year (LS,MS and US).A motion was passed that each school should be given $1,000 annually to use as they wish.
Volunteers:June will get together about connecting our volunteer forms and doing a spring push for volunteers.
Fallapalooza:With its new format this year, this was a great evening. However, more volunteers are needed next year.Everyone had a good time, but the girls turf field was full of trash.Housekeeping staff were supposed to stay until midnight, but through a miscommunication left early and had to be called back.Kudos to the committee for putting on a great event. One note is that a co-chair is needed for next year's event.
Committee reports are attached with discussion on the following:
Hospitality – Over 150 attended Autumn Cheer.Local Flavors was the caterer and we were not totally satisfied; the final bill was about $3,700.It was suggested that next year we need some background music and more committee members.
Fundraising – Spirit Banners are for sale for only $30; order forms can be found on the website and mailed to Missy Moreland.
Luggage Wrap – A very affordable identification solution for luggage; it wraps on the handle of the luggage for easy identification purposes. These would make a good holiday gift.
US Trivia – Missy Moreland is exploring an US Trivia Night through Charm City Trivia.Dr. Coleman is on board with the idea; this would be for students.Parents would be needed to volunteer for the night to sell food.Missy is looking at a Friday night for this event.
Chick-Fil-A – Fundraiser is on November 11 at the Cockeysville Chick-Fil-A between 5:00 p.m. and 7:00 p.m.Mention St. Paul's when placing your order.
Bull Roast donations – Please send information on possible items to Missy Moreland; she is looking for vacation homes, golf outings, things that bring in larger money amounts.
International Block Party:The date is March 27; volunteers are needed to help with this event.Over 300 people attended last year. The next committee meeting is on December 2 at 6:00 p.m. in the athletic center conference room.We would like to have school groups provide entertainment and will have better audio this year.
US Winter Dance:The dance is scheduled for March 6 from 8:00 p.m. to10:00 p.m. with a DJ; dress is chapel attire. This is being coordinated by the Student Council.Boys can bring a date of their choice with a school ID.The cost is $10 for one ticket or $15 for two tickets.
The meeting was adjourned at 8:55 p.m.The next meeting is on December 1 at 7:00 p.m. in Fisher Hall.
