“In the visual arts, students learn to look within, to take risks, and to observe life. Through skill development and critique, a student’s ideas ripen into artistic achievements. Students cultivate an aesthetic vocabulary and connect their artistic exploration to many other subjects, such as history and math. They engage artists from the community and present their own work in exhibits.”

Lower School
Visual Art

The Lower School art program encourages students to be creative artists while learning art fundamentals.  A safe and inviting atmosphere is provided where the young artists can explore, experiment, and grow in their art-making.  Pre-First begins with the very basics of the art world… from learning appropriate use of art supplies to elementary methods of critiquing, and finally to creating their own work based on a master artist’s style.  As the young artists continue through the Lower School, they are introduced to new methods of working with media and materials, art history, art criticism, and self-assessment and reflection.  By the end of their Lower School tenure, students should be able to produce thoughtful work, care for the art studio, have a beginning understanding of art history, and have respect for themselves and other artists.

Middle School
Visual Art

The Middle school visual art program encourages students to explore art through various media, to think creatively, to observe the world around them and to understand and appreciate the process of making art. Through a series of assignments that explore different art forms, students are exposed to the basic elements of art: line, form, shape, texture, color, space and value. They are also introduced to the principles of balance, pattern, contrast, rhythm, emphasis, unity and movement, which are also integral aspects of art making.

In Middle School, students in grades 5-7 continue to be exposed to the visual arts as part of their academic curriculum.

Upper School
Visual Art

Upper School art classes are offered through St. Paul’s School for Girls (SPSG) visual arts program. St. Paul’s offers photography for students in the Upper School.
